CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) is the surgical treatment for severe coronary artery disease, grafting a healthy vessel to bypass blocked arteries and restore blood flow to the heart muscle. At DDMM Heart Institute it is performed by Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, including off-pump total arterial revascularisation.
Overview
CABG is one of the most established and effective treatments for advanced coronary artery disease. When arteries are too narrowed or numerous for stenting, CABG creates new channels around the blockages.
Dr. Sanjeeth Peter specialises in off-pump CABG with total arterial revascularisation (TAR), using arterial grafts such as the internal mammary artery, which offer excellent long-term durability.

Who needs this treatment
CABG is recommended for triple-vessel disease, left-main coronary disease, reduced heart function with multivessel disease, diabetic patients with multivessel disease, and patients whose anatomy is unsuitable for angioplasty.
Common symptoms & conditions
- Triple-vessel coronary disease
- Left-main artery blockage
- Diabetes with multivessel disease
- Failed or unsuitable angioplasty
- Persistent angina despite medication
How the procedure works
Healthy grafts are taken (commonly the internal mammary artery) and sutured above and below each blockage, rerouting blood flow. Several vessels can be treated in one operation.
Off-pump CABG is performed on the beating heart without the heart-lung machine, which can reduce certain risks for suitable patients including the elderly and those with diabetes.
Benefits
- Definitive treatment for multivessel disease
- Excellent long-term arterial graft durability
- Off-pump option lowers some risks
- Strong relief of angina
Risks to discuss with your doctor
- Bleeding, infection or arrhythmia
- Anaesthetic risk
- Longer recovery than stenting
- Individual risk depends on health status β discuss with the team
Recovery
Recovery includes a few days in the cardiac ICU and ward, early mobilisation, then supervised recovery. Most patients return to normal activity over several weeks, supported by cardiac rehabilitation.
Expected stay in India
International CABG patients typically plan for about two weeks in India before fit-to-fly clearance.
Estimated cost in India
CABG cost in India is generally a fraction of private-hospital rates in Western and Gulf countries and depends on the number of vessels, technique, ICU/ward stay and your reports. VNR provides a personalised, all-inclusive estimate from DDMM.
Final cost depends on your medical reports, confirmed diagnosis, hospital stay, implants used and doctor review. Request a free personalised estimate below.
