Coronary angioplasty with stenting (PCI) is a minimally invasive procedure that opens a narrowed coronary artery using a balloon and a stent, restoring blood flow without open surgery. It is performed through the Siemens cardiac cath lab at DDMM Heart Institute and coordinated for international patients by VNR.
Overview
Angioplasty is performed through a thin catheter inserted via the wrist or groin. A balloon widens the narrowed artery and a stent is placed to keep it open. It treats blockages that are suitable for catheter-based intervention.
Compared with bypass surgery, angioplasty is less invasive with a shorter hospital stay, and is well suited to single-vessel or selected multivessel disease.

Who needs this treatment
Angioplasty is considered for coronary blockages causing angina or reduced blood flow that are suitable for stenting, and as urgent treatment during some heart attacks (primary PCI).
Common symptoms & conditions
- Chest pain or pressure
- Breathlessness on exertion
- Abnormal stress test or angiogram
- A single or selected coronary blockages suitable for stenting
How the procedure works
A catheter is guided to the narrowed artery; a balloon is inflated to widen it, and a stent is deployed to hold the artery open. Most patients are awake with local anaesthesia and light sedation.
The number and type of stents depend on your coronary anatomy, confirmed from your angiogram.
Benefits
- Minimally invasive, no open chest
- Short hospital stay
- Rapid recovery
- Suitable for many single-vessel blockages
Risks to discuss with your doctor
- Re-narrowing of the stented segment in some cases
- Bleeding at the access site
- Need for blood-thinning medication
- Individual risk depends on health β discuss with the team
Recovery
Most patients go home within a day or two and return to light activity within about a week, with medication and follow-up advised.
Expected stay in India
International angioplasty patients usually stay a shorter time than surgical patients β often around a week, confirmed in your treatment plan.
Estimated cost in India
Angioplasty and stenting cost in India depends mainly on the number and type of stents used and your reports, and is generally far below private care in many countries. VNR provides a personalised estimate from DDMM.
